Bitewing x-rays are taken once a year to detect dental issues such as decay between the teeth and below the gum line, gum disease, infections, cysts, cancers and traumatic injuries that can’t be seen with the naked eye.

A full mouth x-ray provides a comprehensive view of the entire mouth. It will help diagnose and monitor dental issues such as areas of decay, abscesses, bone loss and infections before they cause problems. The FMX will also help identify impacted teeth. An FMX should be taken every 5 years.

A panoramic x-ray provides a wide-angle image of the entire mouth and jaw, including the teeth, sinuses, and temporomandibular joints. The PAN is useful in detecting cavities, gum disease, abscesses, cysts, oral cancer, jaw tumors and sinusitis. It can help examine bone health and identify bone abnormalities and fractures. A PAN should be taken every 5 yrs.

At first, most cavities aren’t visible without an x-ray. However, as they progress, small holes may appear in your tooth. Your dentist will have the tools to help take a closer look. One powerful tool is dental x-rays.
Fluoride is a natural mineral found in the earth’s rock, soil, and water supply. It helps prevent decay by putting minerals back in enamel that has been lost due to acidic foods and/or beverages (external factors) or from GERD otherwise known as acid reflux/heartburn (internal factors).
Teeth can be sensitive for a few reasons. Two easy ways to combat tooth sensitivity are to use an over-the-counter toothpaste labeled for sensitivity or use a prescriptive strength fluoride toothpaste available from your dentist. You can brush with either of these or dab them on the area that is sensitive.
Tooth discoloration can be from external (extrinsic) or internal (intrinsic) stain. External stain can often be polished off from the tooth surface. There are multiple over the counter toothpaste products that claim to be “whitening toothpastes”. These products all have abrasive particles in them that assist in stain removal. Internal stain requires either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide to seep into the tooth surface to brighten the color. There are a limited number of toothpaste products that do contain these chemicals in them; however, the most effective way to improve your smile and make it brighter is to apply a whitening gel directly to the teeth. These products include the “whitening strips” you see advertised or custom fabricated soft trays that hold the gel product directly in contact with the teeth. These are usually worn overnight. As always, please feel free to ask us about your whitening options or any dental procedure.
